Forss House Hotel, Activities Fishing Trout - Brown Trout fishing in rivers and lochs in Caithness

Caithness is world renowned for the quality and diversity of its wild brown trout fishing. Most of the county is under laid with limestone and the localised feeding is rich with the wild fish growing to an above average size.

The best months to visit us are normally May to September with excellent mayfly (Green Drake) hatches experienced from mid June to mid August.

Flies to bring with you include most traditional Scottish loch style patterns like the Soldier Palmer, Zulu or Invicta together with some exciting dry flies like the Adams, Black Gnat or the Elk Hair Sedge. Fly size varies between 10 to 16 but there are well stocked tackle shops in the local towns of Wick and Thurso if you come unprepared. Most of the fishing is 'top of the water' executed with a floating line and a rod of 9 to 10ft.

The Forss House Hotel is centrally located for famous waters like Loch Watten, Loch St Johns, Heilan, Calder, Reay Lochs, Toftingall and there is also trout fishing on a day permit available on the River Thurso.
