The bar at Forss has around 270 malt whiskies, with many bottles from rare and old distillations and there are even a handful of bottles from distilleries which are now closed or demolished.
We are proud of the variety from the different regions of Highland, Speyside, Islay, Campbeltown, Lowland and Islands ranging from the 10 year old to 15, 18 and 25 year olds to one 30 year old.
With many distilleries now using different casks to mature their whiskies the resulting malts have different “notes”. For example bourbon casks produce a mild, sweet and almost vanilla note while sherry casks produce a sweet but heavier wine note. Each malt has its own note and the most distinct must be the Islays which smell smokey and sea-weedy almost iodine-like. The malts finished in the sherry casks have a sweet caramel smell.
We also stock several Irish malts just to make our Irish guests feel “at home”.
We are always happy to give guests after-dinner tasting sessions to sample a dram from our local Old Pulteney or the neighbouring Orkney’s Highland Park and Scapa or indeed any from your favourite region. We also have the technology to add that one “tear-drop” of H2O essential to release the esters and essences – but that secret you can only find out by being our guests!
